Problems with dropbxes

when the following tag is used in my web page

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">

All of the dropboxes within the editor stretch to the width of the editor, the problem is that if I remove the above tag some of the CSS elements in my page are not read.

Anyone have any ideas ??
