Yesterday my answer would have been Firefox 1.0, but just for you I downloaded a fresh copy of 1.02 from the source.  Same problem:  The insert buttons that open a dialog do not modify the editor text.  That includes Emotions, Images, Special Characters, and Templates.  ¿ These commands do work here in the forum, but not for me on Firefox in the default configuration demo.  Insert commands such as time, date, and break, work fine.

Now I'll try inserting emotions into other demos.  It doesn't work in "Spell Checker".  But it does work in "Line Break," "Multiple Editors" and "Edit static HTML."

I'll stop here and get back to my project.
