I recently had a simular issue.  The development enviroment was not clustered and the production was.  When we moved it to production the editor was loading in about one and half minutes.  It turned out that in the editor.config there was a switch "MultipleServerMode" and it was set to false.  We have set it to true and it is now loaded normally.
