In IE8 the javascript method "CuteWebUI_AjaxUploader_OnInitialize()" is never called. So I suppose the Uploader is never initialized, which would explain why the button performs a postback instead of the desired behaviour.  Any Ideas why Uploader won't initialize?

koala59230,   Whenever the user makes changes to Cute Editor content,  Cute Editor automatically updated the hidden field. You can always get this value using JavaScript API.

Our department forbids the use of JavaScript alert due to accessibility issues with blind people.  Is there a way to show the file too large error in the asp.net validation summary control instead?

I try to load the CuteEditor inside an  asp:DetailsView and I get a javascript error on Line: 27 Object Expected.  I'm able to load this outside of the details view fine.  Does anyone have any suggestions?      

JRuiz, The ASP version should not have any license issue. You may have some JavaScript issue. Please post a screenshot or the error messages here.
