How to remove a photo background for free

A clean cutout starts with a sharp photo. Good lighting and a clear gap between the subject and the background do most of the work.

Start with a good photo

• Use a photo where the subject is in focus and the background is a different colour or tone.
• Avoid heavy shadows on the background, and keep loose hair and fur in good light.

Remove the background

• Upload the photo to the AI background remover. Preview the cutout before you pay for anything.
• Look at edges, hair and gaps between arms or legs. If a part is missing, try a photo with more contrast.

Pick the right format

• A transparent background needs a PNG file. JPG files cannot store transparency.
