What it is

What is a rich text editor?

A rich text editor (also called a WYSIWYG or HTML editor) replaces a plain <textarea> with a word-processor-style box. Your users type, format text, add links, tables and images, and see the result as they go. Behind the scenes the editor produces HTML, which you save to your database and show on your pages.

Choosing an editor

What to check before you pick one.

HTML output: is the saved HTML clean and predictable, or full of inline styles and empty tags you will have to clean up later?
Paste handling: what happens when users paste from Word or a web page? This causes more support tickets than anything else.
Server-side pieces: image upload and file browsing need a server part. Check it exists for your stack, not only the front end.
Licensing: perpetual or subscription, per developer or per domain, and whether you may redistribute it inside your own product.
Longevity: how long has the editor been maintained, and will it still be supported when you next upgrade your framework?

Does it work with ASP.NET Core and Blazor?

How do I get the HTML out of the editor?

Read it through the editor's API (getHTMLCode in the JavaScript build) or, in the .NET builds, read the control's value like any other form field, then save that HTML to your database.
