Frequently asked questions
Why is the city shown wrong?
IP geolocation maps an address to where the network registers it, which can be a different city or the location of your provider's gateway. It is usually right about the country and often wrong about the neighbourhood, so treat it as approximate.
Why does my IP address change?
Most home connections get a dynamic address that the provider may rotate after a reconnection. Mobile networks change it more often still, and a VPN replaces it entirely with the address of the server you are routed through.
What is the difference between my public and local IP address?
The public address is what websites see and is shared by every device behind your router. The local address — typically starting 192.168 or 10. — only exists inside your own network and cannot be reached from the internet.
Can someone find my home address from my IP?
Not from the address alone. Only your provider holds the subscriber records that link an address to a person, and normally releases them only to a lawful request.
Your IPv6Checking…
Separate IPv4/IPv6 connectivity checks by ipify. Your browser contacts ipify to detect each address. VPN routing may differ by destination.
