How to compare two versions of a document
When a document changes hands several times, the quickest way to see what changed is to compare the two versions side by side.
Paste both versions
- Copy the older version into the first box and the newer one into the second.
- The differences are highlighted line by line. Check the numbers, dates and names first, because a small change there matters most.
Check what the tool sees
- The text compare tool runs in your browser and does not upload either version, so it suits drafts and contracts.
- Formatting, tables and tracked changes in Word files are not compared this way. Use the Word comparison tool for DOCX files.
Compare PDFs or Word files
- For PDFs, the PDF compare tool shows text changes page by page.
- For Word documents, the DOCX comparison tool exports the changes as tracked-change files.
The text compare tool is free and does not upload your text. The PDF compare and Word comparison tools are paid per export; see each tool page for the price.
