START WITH WHAT YOU HAVE DONE

A useful starting point for your experience.

These fictional examples show how to describe real work. Use a line only when it is true for you; add numbers only when you can verify them.

Retail and customer service

Instead of: “Worked in a shop.”
Try: “Helped customers locate products, replenished shelves and kept the shop floor organized.”

Confirm which tasks you actually performed. Mention cash handling or returns only if they were part of your role.

Warehouse and practical work

Instead of: “Helped in the warehouse.”
Try: “Picked and packed orders, checked items against packing lists and maintained an orderly work area.”

Include equipment, licenses or safety training only if you have them. Do not add a forklift qualification just because the job requires it.

First job, school or volunteering

Instead of: “No work experience.”
Try: “Coordinated tasks with classmates to complete a group project and present the results.”

Describe an actual project or volunteer role and your own contribution. Label it as a project or volunteering rather than paid employment.
