    Look for these qualities

    Straight ahead, neutral expression

An even background and balanced lighting make the details easier to review.

    Watch for head tilt

    Keep your head level

Compare your eye line and head position with the on-screen guides.

    Watch for a smile

    Use a neutral expression

This example shows an open mouth and visible teeth.

    Watch for shadows

Check both sides of the face

Strong shadows can hide facial details and darken the background.

    Watch for distractions

    Review the background

A busy room is a useful example of what to flag in your visual review.

    Watch for covered eyes

    Keep eyes clearly visible

Sunglasses obscure the eyes. Check your selected format’s official requirements.

Photo requirements & frequently asked questions

Canadian photo preparation: what this tool can help with

Start with a photo from your photographer and select the document and application method. The original-file review reports dimensions, file type, file size and aspect ratio where a digital specification applies. Paper presets show a frame reference, but pixels alone cannot establish the physical size or quality of a print. The selected specification and official source link remain visible beside the controls so you can compare the requirements with your application instructions.

Does a successful file check mean my photo is accepted?

No. File properties do not establish whether a photo is recent, unedited, professionally taken or correctly lit. This tool cannot verify identity, facial expression, image manipulation, background quality or photographer credentials. There is no human expert review and no acceptance guarantee. Mark the crown and chin yourself to get a positioning estimate, then review the separate visual checklist. The crown is the top of the skull, not the top of the hairstyle. A misplaced line gives a misleading measurement.

Why are original review and layout drafts separate?

Canadian passport and permanent-resident photo rules require professional photographs and restrict alterations. Keep the photographer’s original file for the official process. Original review changes only the on-screen guides; Download original returns the selected file without re-encoding it. Layout draft mode lets you explore framing with zoom and position controls, but the exported image is labelled as a draft and is not for an official application. This tool does not remove backgrounds, retouch faces or generate photographer certifications.

How should I use a print layout?

Paper presets can arrange two draft copies on a six-by-four-inch sheet. Choose the matching landscape paper size and actual-size printing, with no fit-to-page scaling or browser headers. Measure the printed reference before relying on its dimensions. These layouts are for discussing framing or planning a session; Canadian passport photos require professional photographic printing. Keep the date taken and studio details supplied by the photographer, and follow the application-specific instructions for information on the back.

    Where does my photograph go?

The browser reads the selected JPEG or PNG locally. The tool does not upload it, save it to browser storage or send it to an AI service. Clear photo removes the current working image and checklist from the page. Files you download remain on your device until you delete them. Use a current browser, keep the original separate from drafts and check the official instructions again before submitting an application.
