How this tool works

Percentage change is (new − original) ÷ original × 100. A zero original has no defined percentage change. Reverse calculations divide by the percentage factor. An original value before a 100% decrease cannot be recovered.

What is the difference between percentage change and percentage points?

A rise from 4% to 6% is a 50% increase but a 2 percentage point increase. Use percentage change when comparing the size of two numbers, and percentage points when both numbers are themselves percentages — mixing them is the most common error in reporting.

How do I work backwards from a total that already includes a percentage?

Use the reverse calculation. Dividing a tax-inclusive total of 113 by 1.13 gives the original 100; subtracting 13% would give 98.31, which is wrong. The reverse mode does this division for you.

Are the results rounded?

Results are displayed to a readable number of decimals, but the arithmetic is done at full precision. For money, round only at the final step, and check whether your invoice or tax rules require rounding up or to the nearest cent.
