How this tool works

Word boundaries use your browser’s language-aware segmenter. Characters are Unicode code points; joined emoji can contain several. Paragraphs are separated by blank lines. Reading time is an estimate, using your chosen speed.

How is a word counted?

Runs of characters separated by whitespace, which is the same rule word processors use. Hyphenated compounds count as one word and an em dash between words does not join them, so results line up with a typical document count.

Is the character count the same as the one Twitter or an SMS uses?

Not always. Characters are counted as Unicode code points, so most emoji count as one. SMS counts 7-bit units and switches to a 70-character limit as soon as any non-Latin character appears; social platforms apply their own per-link rules.

How is reading time estimated?

From an average of roughly 200 to 250 words per minute for adult silent reading of general prose. Technical material, tables and code are read far more slowly, so treat the estimate as a floor rather than a promise.
