How this tool works

Select a measurement, enter an amount, then choose the source and destination units. US liquid and Imperial gallons are separate units. Temperature conversions include an offset. Values below absolute zero are rejected. Results are rounded to 12 significant digits.

Which definitions of the units do you use?

International (SI) definitions throughout, with US customary units where they differ from imperial. That matters most for volume: a US gallon is 3.785 litres and an imperial gallon is 4.546 litres, so the two are listed separately rather than merged.

Why does a temperature conversion not scale like the others?

Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points, so they need an offset as well as a factor rather than a simple multiplication. A temperature difference converts differently from a temperature reading — a change of 10°C is a change of 18°F, not 50°F.

How precise are the conversions?

Conversions use full double-precision arithmetic and are only rounded for display, so results are accurate well beyond everyday needs. For engineering tolerances, keep the unrounded figure rather than the shortened one shown.
